Core-spun yarn, also known as composite yarn or covered yarn, is a new type of yarn. First researched and promoted in the 1960s, it was developed to meet the clothing industry’s demands for elasticity, comfort, and durability.
Typically, it’s made by combining two or more fibers with different properties, featuring a structure consisting of an inner core and outer fibers. The inner core is usually synthetic fibers with good strength and elasticity, such as polyester, nylon, or spandex, while the outer layer is covered with short fibers like cotton, wool, or viscose.
Simply put, core-spun yarn retains the strength and elasticity of the filament core yarn while boasting the comfort and softness of the outer short fibers.

Core-spun yarn fabrics have their own unique traits. For example, those combining silk’s texture and breathability with spandex’s elasticity make high-end clothing that’s comfortable, flatters the body’s curves beautifully, and serves as an excellent fabric for summer garments—with huge potential in demand.
In recent years, thanks to improved living standards, shifting consumer trends, and advancements in application technologies, spandex has seen a significant expansion in both its range of applications and usage volume. It has moved beyond traditional fields to new areas like casual wear and outerwear, while its proportion in traditional products has also increased. Today, spandex is widely used in clothing and apparel, making its presence felt almost everywhere.
Comparison with other yarns.
Yarn Type | Advantages | Disadvantages | Main Applications |
Cotton Yarn | Breathable, soft, suitable for close-fitting clothes | Not wear – resistant, easy to shrink and deform | T – shirts, shirts, underwear, socks, baby clothes |
Polyester Yarn | Good wear resistance, poor moisture absorption | Poor air permeability, low comfort | Sportswear, outdoor products |
Mercerized Yarn | High gloss, smooth touch | High production cost, easily damaged | High – end shirts, knitted products |
Acrylic Yarn | Good warmth retention, light | Easy to pill, not wear – resistant | Sweaters, scarves |
Core – spun Yarn | Inexpensive, wear – resistant, good elasticity, suitable for high – strength sewing | Easy to pill, relatively narrow application range | Jeans, sportswear, elastic clothing, socks, gloves, sweaters |
